Rising Star KOLs - Why are they Important?

Rising stars are KOLs that are gaining influence among their peers. They are growing their profile. They are building their expertise in a particular therapy area.

What does this look like, I hear you ask?

Well, these KOLs are publishing more. They are collaborating with Tier 1 KOLs. They are on the podium presenting at congresses. They are also more active with relevant patient and healthcare associations.

They may have a little bit of experience working with pharma but not loads…..yet.

Engaging rising stars as an MSL is important because:

1. Rising stars are often early in their career and offer a fresh perspective. This also means a company has a pipeline of experts they can partner with (see point 3).

2. You can partner with them before they start working with lots of other pharma companies. You can collaborate with them to increase their profile. This will lead to a long lasting partnership, which will increase in value as their influence grows.

How can you do this? You can offer the rising star a chance to get involved in company clinical trials. You can expand their network of Tier 1 KOLs by introducing them to the right people. You can engage them as a speaker.

3. KOLs retire. Relying on Tier 1 experts alone puts your KOL engagement strategy at risk. If your other KOLs want to to reduce their workload and pharma partnerships.

Take home message: Identify and nurture your rising stars. Your company will recognise your leadership and forward looking initiative.
