Can you take notes in front of KOLs?

KOLs are a wealth of information and you want to ensure you listen to every word they say ……and remember it accurately.

So, can you take notes in front of KOLs? The answer is yes but use this guidance to ensure you capture the key information and don’t hinder developing a rapport.

Face to Face Meetings

Don’t use an ipad/laptop to take notes, using a digital device to take notes in front of a KOL appears rude and may create a physical barrier between you (in the case of a laptop) and will limit rapport building.

Use a small notebook (no bigger than A5) and jot down a few key things, but try to retain as much eye contact as possible.

Have the questions you are asking written in the notebook so you can jot down answers under each question. This will help you fill in the blanks after the meeting and ensure you know which insight relates to which question.

Virtual Meetings

Virtual meetings enable you to take notes while still appearing engaged.

Be sure you are still looking at the camera while taking notes (i.e. don’t have gdoc/word doc on your second screen and turn your head sideways as the KOL is talking (super rude!).

Ensure your keyboard isn't too loud. Hearing someone clak-clak-clak’ing as you talk is really off putting for the KOL and will limit the insights you gather.

After Every Meeting

Schedule 15 minutes in your diary to fill out your short hand notes while it is fresh in your head, take notes of any action items and plan next steps with that KOL to further develop the relationship and execute against your strategic objectives.
